Team Rescue Techniques Petzl Maestro Static and dynamic tests

The Petzl MAESTRO descender has undergone rigorous static and dynamic testing to ensure its reliability in technical rescue operations. These evaluations were conducted in controlled laboratory settings using new devices and ropes certified to current standards. It’s important to note that results may vary with equipment that has experienced wear or when using different rope types or models.

Static Tests: A slow-pull test was performed on various ropes to determine the load at which the rope begins to slip within the MAESTRO device. This test helps establish the device’s holding capacity under gradual loading conditions.

Dynamic Tests: The MAESTRO was subjected to several dynamic assessments, including:

  • EN 12841 Certification Test: Involves a 1-meter fall using a 1-meter dynamic rope lanyard with an 11 mm diameter rope.
  • EN 341 Certification Test: Consists of a 60 cm fall on 4 meters of rope to evaluate the device’s performance during descent control scenarios.
  • NFPA Certification Test: Conducted with a rigid mass to simulate real-world rescue loads and assess the device’s response.

Additional tests by Petzl included:

  • A 60 cm fall on 3 meters of rope using a dummy and harness setup.
  • A 1-meter fall on 3 meters of rope with a rigid mass.

These dynamic tests are crucial for understanding the MAESTRO’s behavior under sudden load conditions, ensuring it meets safety standards for technical rescues.

For detailed information on these tests and their outcomes, refer to Petzl’s official documentation:

It’s essential for users to consult the device’s instructions and technical notices to fully comprehend its capabilities and limitations. Proper training and adherence to safety protocols are paramount when employing the MAESTRO in rescue scenarios.

STATIC TESTS

Slow-pull test carried out on different ropes; the measured value is the load at which the rope begins to slip in the device.

DYNAMIC TESTS ON THE MAESTRO

Fall arrest tests carried out during EN 12841, EN 341, NFPA certifications, and during additional Petzl tests designed to cover exceptional situations.

Note: not all of the tests carried out are cited here, only those yielding relevant information on MAESTRO use.

EN 12841 certification test: Device on 1 m of rope, 1 m fall on a 1 m x 11 mm dynamic rope lanyard.

EN 341 certification test: 60 cm fall on 4 m of rope.

NFPA certification test with rigid mass.

Additional Petzl tests with dummy and harness: 60 cm fall on 3 m of rope.

Additional Petzl tests with rigid mass: 1 m fall on 3 m of rope.
